If you know me, you know my mom @maryamegal is a huge inspiration in my life. When she was 16, she left a very remote community in Somalia and ended up in Canada. As first generation Somali children, she made sure me and my siblings knew our native land and took us back to Somalia whenever she could afford it. It became an important part of my identity. I immediately fell in love with the beauty of the land and the rural areas. The termite mounds. The camels. The pastoralist lifestyle my mother grew up in; and the warmth of the sun and the people. She taught me the importance of agricultural development, when you depend on the land to survive. She knows how a simple well and water irrigation can change lives. And she knows how much women in Africa are suffering as we speak. It was my mother who first told @idriselba and I about this great organization helping poor rural people – IFAD – and that we needed to get involved. So, we went to Sierra Leone and we were blown away by the impact @IFADnews is having on the ground. Today I was officially designated as a @UN Goodwill Ambassador for IFAD, with a focus on empowering rural women and girls. I am honoured and I am humbled. There are 1.7 billion rural women and girls. who all need hope. I promise to serve with dignity, diligence and dedication. Thank you Mom for inspiring me always, I hope I can make you proud.
