His folks named him after Leland “Lou” Diamond, a US Marine. Following the demise of his dad, he was embraced by his stepfather and given the last name Phillips.

Phillips initially met Jennifer Tilly, with whom he was presently drawn in, on the Shadow of the Wolf (1992) set.
