She met Andrew Chatto, the maker of products of the soil of Chatto and Windus, the originator of the organization, in the mid 1940s. In 1943 they were united by their common love of plants. In 1946 and 1948, their two little girls, Diana and Mary, woke up in Braiswick, Colchester.
In 1960, they entered the new White Barn House, built on Elmstead’s homestead. Tragically, in 1999 Andrew died. At 94 years old, on 13 May 2018, Bath Chatto died.
