#tuesdaythoughts : ’ – ! Dad’s belief that fear should not stop you from launching your own business and his antics to grow Virgin have been written about so much. He has always lived his life not letting fear stop him – I think if he feels frightened by a decision – it almost pushes him in to saying yes! Growing up we’d roll our eyes at the kitchen table, as he’d talk us through the latest idea someone had had: “Per thinks we should attempt to circumnavigate the globe in a balloon – what do you think?” “You are going to love the plans for the launch of •••• (could have been any of our companies!) I’m going to abseil down a sixty-story building.” The list goes on! From attempting to break sail records in boats, abseiling/dancing off spaceports and epic 2,000 km extreme Strive challenges, in the last decade where dad has gone – Sam and me have too. Our poor mum! One of the hardest and toughest challenges I’ve ever done was the 2,000 km @virgin @strivechallenge in 2016 to raise funds for @bigchangecharity. When I say tough I mean excruciating, grueling and seemingly never ending! Dad was by far the oldest core team member to take part in the month long challenge. Men and women decades his junior would end up in tears, be so exhausted that they couldn’t even manage to eat at the end of the day and dad just kept on going. He’d get up at 4.30am and set off hours before everyone else simply because he didn’t want to hold anyone back. Never complaining, always smiling and giving support to the rest of the team and matching km to km with 28 year olds and this was all after a pretty horrific bike crash in training! I’d get up with him some mornings to keep him company – those days were the best – on our bikes before dawn, tackling huge gradients enjoying a beautiful silence – just me and my dad. Thanks for that time, dad and teaching me that no matter how challenging a situation is, how exhausted you might be and how much you want to throw in the towel – the human spirit always has that little final burst of grit and determination to get you through.
